Choosing a CareerRemember when adults would ask you as a child, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

The answer seemed pretty straight forward to most of us back then.

Since we’ve now grown up, the question becomes real and urges you to think more in depth about your answer.

We want to help you, so we’ve explored some ways in which you can feel more comfortable in your considerations for a career or perhaps a change in career because yes—it’s perfectly okay to switch careers!

Get to know yourself better

The best person to understand what you’ll enjoy doing as a career is yourself.

There are many helpful self-assessment tests, personality type tests and general skills tests you can take to help narrow this area a bit. Though, generally knowing what skills you have and are able to hone further within a specific career can be incredibly beneficial.

Make a list, check it twice

Making a list of industries that interest you is a wonderful way to start exploring your options and narrowing your search down. Keep the list nearby so that you can easily make updates, since your interests are bound to evolve over time.

Learn from people in the field

By connecting with people in different industries, you can develop a sense of what a position in that field may hold. You can add pros/cons to your list depending on the information offered by the industry professional you meet with.

Additionally, you can seek internships or apprenticeships in fields you feel the most strongly drawn to in an effort to “test the waters.”

Research job availability

It is always a good idea to know how “in demand” your career choice is. This shouldn’t discourage you from following your passions and interests, but rather, provide you with options and knowledge to make decisions.

If you are going into a field where you may have to relocate in order to accept a position, it’s a good idea to be prepared for that prior to pursuing it.
